(Anonymous) 2017-02-14 03:53 pm (UTC)(link)Doyoung knew it was quite childish and unbecoming for a candidate of the student council to vandalize their rival’s campaign poster. But he had legit reasons to do so: he hated Jaehyun. For the past three years, Doyoung had diligently worked his ass off to slowly build up his reputation in this university. He had attended a lot of clubs, joined countless outreach programs, studied hard and even went all out to befriend students from different majors just so he could amass enough popularity to win the election on his third year.
However, all of his hard work was easily trampled by Jung Jaehyun who suddenly appeared out of nowhere and enchanted everyone with his good looks, perfect smile, charming personality and amazing confidence. Jaehyun was like the epitome of perfection whereas Doyoung was the embodiment of awkward. He was never going to win against the likes of him. And his ranking on the latest survey (titled ‘Who among the candidates would you date for Valentine’s day?’) would definitely attest to that (Jaehyun was first, he ranked last). But Doyoung wasn’t going to be disheartened that easily. He still has time to turn everything around in his favor. So what if it was Valentine’s Day? There were more pressing matters he needed to do rather than look for a date, such as scribbling on Jaehyun's poster with his favorite marker early in the morning. Yep, this was more important.
‘An ugly mustache here… a few gaps in his teeth there… coupled by horns… acnes all over his beautiful face’. Doyoung smiled widely when he was done, quite contented of his handiwork. Now, he only had to do the same to the rest of Jaehyun's posters scattered all over the campus.
Re: Jung Jaehyun (NCT)
(Anonymous) 2017-02-14 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)So maybe Jung Jaehyun wouldn't be described as petty, but he took competition very seriously. When he stumbled through the empty halls, he was relieved for just a small respite from campaigning. So, it was a surprise that jolted him back into action to see his competitor defacing his poster. He remained unnoticed at first as he decided the appropriate response. The best thing, the course of action he would feel best about would have been to turn and walk back the way he came and pretend he never saw it. He had always been about the high road, after all, appearing innocent yet untouchable was his saving grace.
But unbeknownst to anyone, Doyoung had gotten under his skin. It was the reason he ran against him in the first place. The popularity he had taken as a given was being threatened by this kid. If he had only been tall and handsome, Jaehyun considered, he'd not have been too much of a match for him. But in addition to that, running for student council had given him the platform to play almost as a foil to Jaehyun's sweet reputation. His blunt way of talking, his spontaneous jokes, even at his own expense at times, were disarming to his schoolmates and, though he would never openly admit it, Jaehyun himself. In short: How dare he?!
Yes, Jaehyun needed to respond in some way to this situation, exploit it somehow. Exposing Doyoung for this directly was both tacky, out of character and maybe unnecessary. But simply addressing it wouldn't be out of line, right? No, in fact, he could simply enjoy the amusement of catching his rival engaging in a low act itself for his own knowledge. So he stood there silently for a moment before he gathered his words and brief acting training. He feigned surprise as if he had just arrived on the scene a millisecond ago.
"Oh, Doyoung-ssi. Is that...? Do you think that makes me look ugly?" He asked, voice saccharine but low and barely masking how he thought it was a shoddy job at sabotage. It was a talent, however, to be able to hide a smug smile into a typical friendly and warm one. But he was sure his disdain came through to Doyoung, who had also just made it clear what he really felt about his opposition. He stepped closer to his rival, as if to let him have a better look at the face he had defiled with marker mere seconds ago.
Re: Jung Jaehyun (NCT)
(Anonymous) 2017-02-15 06:41 am (UTC)(link)Doyoung could feel his heart in his throat, palms beginning to sweat as anxiety slowly curls in his stomach. What should he do? He never really thought of a backup plan if things go awry. He didn’t really think it was necessary since he didn’t expect to get caught in the first place, and by Jaehyun, of all people. He quickly ran through series of possible courses of action for a situation like this. It was too late to try to run and hide since Jaehyun had already seen his face. And it would be pointless to deny everything when he was literally caught red-handed. The marker in his hand was glaring evidence. Maybe he could use his non-existent martial arts moves to knock Jaehyun out and hide his body in a closet somewhere. As tempting as it was, he wasn’t that heartless, or really capable of knocking someone out cold. So he was left with no other choice but to face his rival. He quickly composed himself before facing the other, a fake smile etched on his face.
“In contrary, I was actually just improving your face.” Doyoung answered, trying to sound not intimidated by Jaehyun’s presence. He stood his ground, refusing to take a step back when the other stepped closer. However, he couldn’t stop himself from worrying. Would Jaehyun use this against him? It would really affect his reputation if the other would tattle about this to everyone. Despite the innocent and friendly image his opposition was showcasing to everybody, he knew Jaehyun was far from being one. No one was that perfect. Besides, he always had a suspicion that the other disliked him as much as he did. “I think the horns look pretty good on you, don’t you think, Jaehyun-ssi? I think it totally reflects your true personality.”
Re: Jung Jaehyun (NCT)
(Anonymous) 2017-02-16 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)Oh, how wrong he was about both of their abilities to do so. How much he underestimated Doyoung in that moment, a mistake he usually tried not to make. To his further detriment, it wasn't subtle enough, the way Doyoung's retort broke the smile on Jaehyun's face with ease. And it was upsetting to be caught breaking character, especially given the fact that he had just been called on it. It was almost like giving him ammo to use against him, despite him not having true evidence that could be presented of this. On top of everything, it was additionally frustrating because he was the one who caught his opponent in a petty act. Why had he allowed Doyoung to rattle him this way?
But regardless, Jaehyun had faith in his ability to smooth things over for himself at least, gathering what bravado remained with a deep breath. "Oh, I trust that there are plenty of folks who would disagree with you and it's their opinion that matters anyway." Jaehyun held out one arm out to touch the wall at Doyoung's side, his gaze following to stare at the poster. For a brief moment, it looked as if he was going to tear the poster off the wall, but he stopped himself. He turned to look at Doyoung pensively, then, curling his lips into his mouth. In his mind, he almost wished he too had a marker to wreck his competitor's face in real time because this close up, it isn't fair how handsome he really was, even if he didn't know it - and that was what really irked him. Especially with this determinism, however difficult it was for him to muster (that fact unknown to Jaehyun). They were both simultaneously good at bluffing, yet not good at hiding their strong antagonistic feelings for one another and here it was at the surface.
"You know what, let's leave the poster as is. That's all the students will see: that someone on your side resorted to such a low tactic. Never mind that everyone's gone for the day and that the morning clean up crew are fans of mine." The smug smile returned. "Tell me something, though." Jaehyun stepped closer again and folded his arms across his chest. "Do you not have plans today? Nothing better to do than this?"
Re: Jung Jaehyun (NCT)
(Anonymous) 2017-02-17 12:59 pm (UTC)(link)His gaze followed Jaehyun’s hand. He thought that the other would tear the poster off, but he didn’t. And the reason why made Doyoung regret his decision of vandalizing. Jaehyun was right. This action would only tarnish his own side more than it would his rival. In fact, it might even bring in more sympathy towards Jaehyun’s team if the other played his cards right. ‘Damn it. I shouldn’t have listened to Ten’s advice.’ It was a stupid idea. Why did he even listen to it? He should have known his friend was up to something when he planted the idea in his head. But he was the bigger idiot for falling for it.
Doyoung still refused to take a step back, although his resolution was starting to wane. Jaehyun was starting to get awfully close for his liking, the discomfort showing visibly on his feature. If Jaehyun looked handsome in poster, it was nothing compared to seeing him in person, and at this proximity. He could feel his self-confidence slowly taking a nosedive the closer the other gets. His fingers curled tightly on his marker. There was a growing temptation to take a quick swipe on Jaehyun’s cheek to make him look less perfect and wipe off that smug smile off him.
“I have other better things to do… I have… stuff to work on for the campaign.” That was an obvious lie. Honestly, aside from defacing the posters, he didn’t have anything planned for the entire day. He was too busy obsessing in defeating Jaehyun that it was the only thing occupying his mind lately. He knew it was Valentine’s Day, but he hasn’t planned anything special. Why would he? He had no one to celebrate it with. He did receive a few chocolates from his supporters though, which made him really happy. “And how about you? Shouldn’t you be celebrating your birthday somewhere with your fans rather than snooping around on what your opponents are doing?”
Re: Jung Jaehyun (NCT)
(Anonymous) 2017-02-17 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)Jaehyun tried to simply sound matter-of-fact about it and dodged the specific part of the question about his plans. Sure, it probably was surprising that he had none, as Doyoung's words suggested, since he should have had no trouble finding a date on this day with so many fans. On one hand he'd been told that it was good to keep his mystique by remaining "available yet unattainable" and he sort of blindly followed that for some time until he mainly just got used to being alone. Of course he wished he had someone special to spend the day with every now and then, but the deeper truth was that he hadn't found anyone that stirred any particularly strong emotions in him.
Unless one counted Doyoung. But, no, those were feelings of hatred and contempt. Surely not anything else. That old phrase came to mind about the thin line between love and hate...but, no, no no. Jaehyun tried not to let himself wonder down that path too long. Whatever was possibly lurking there could only be a weakness and there was still a week before the vote. Now was not the time to show any of that. Despite the effort to shake those abrupt thoughts away, it did give him an idea. And before he could reign that one in, he spoke it out loud.
"I have a proposition for you. How about this: treat me to a birthday dinner?" Was it a trap? A peace offering? A gesture of strange curiosity? It was likely a combination of all of the above. Today had already been a little bizarre and in all honesty, the whole campaign was worthy of theater. Even moreso in this moment, straight out of an eighties' high school comedy. Not that he had seen too many of those. But hey, why not embrace the unconventional, he thought. He decided to also be a little transparent about his plans, but still held back these new questions that were hesitant to come to light, even to his own self.
"We can spin it this way: you offered to treat me to a meal as a way to apologize for your fans' childish behavior and then I still look gracious for agreeing to eat with my rival."
Re: Jung Jaehyun (NCT)
(Anonymous) 2017-02-18 06:24 am (UTC)(link)“Why would you even want me to treat you to dinner? Wouldn’t you like it more if you spend your birthday with someone you actually like rather than with your own rival?” He said, tilting his head to the side.
The offer might be quite suspicious but Doyoung still weighed the pros and cons of accepting it. The obvious pros would be he’d save face in front of everyone and no one would ever know that he had gone as low as vandalizing another candidate’s campaign posters. And in the end, he might still be able to win the election. While the cons would be… he’d never hear the end of Ten’s teasing. His Thai friend and campaign manager would never let him live it down once he finds out that he had shared a meal with his rival on Valentine’s Day (and on said rival’s birthday, too), especially after all those late night rants he made about Jaehyun and how he said he would rather die than be seen getting friendly around him. His friend had already been teasing him lately that he was acting like a schoolgirl with a crush whenever the topic of Jaehyun comes around. It was quite absurd, of course. Why would he even have a crush on him when there was nothing else he felt for his rival but hate? Sure, he sometimes catches himself admiring Jaehyun’s fa—No. He quickly stopped his thoughts right there. That was a path he didn’t want to go. The main point was he only had strong feelings of hatred towards Jaehyun. Nothing else.
“And If I do accept your offer, how can I be certain you’ll never tell everyone about what I did?” Doyoung pressed the back tip of his marker on Jaehyun's chest, trying to push him back slightly to create a little more space between them. "I don't really trust you, you know."
